Permacrisis
Constant state of crisis
Details
Our Take
Collins Word of the Year 2022. More rhetorical than analytical -- good headline word, weak for policy clarity because it does not specify which crises, how they connect, or what to do about them. The contrast with 'polycrisis' is worth drawing: permacrisis emphasises duration (it never stops); polycrisis emphasises interconnection (they make each other worse). Permacrisis describes what frontline workers feel; polycrisis describes the mechanism.
Synonyms/Variants
Permanent emergency; Chronic crisis; Perpetual crisis
Typical everyday wording
The feeling that crisis never ends.
