Narrative literacy
The capacity to understand, craft, and critically engage with stories that shape what we think is possible.
Details
Our Take
Perhaps even more fundamental than written literacy: 'if we cannot get to written literacy with everyone, at least let us get to story and narrative literacy'.
Ideological Framing
The 'two wolves' parable illustrates the stakes: we feed hope or despair through the stories we tell. A practical competence for anyone working in futures -- the ability to read the stories communities tell about the future, and to craft alternatives that open rather than close possibility.
Synonyms/Variants
Story literacy; Narrative intelligence; Critical storytelling
Typical everyday wording
Understanding how stories shape what we think is possible -- and learning to tell better ones.
